The Clark County Historical Society/Museum (CCHS/CCHM) provides a public service to the citizens of Clark County working under contract and in partnership with Clark County and the City of Vancouver serving as the county museum repository. It holds in public trust an estimated 8 million dollar collection of historic archives and 3-dimensional artifacts for the citizens of Clark County. The American Association of Museums classifies the CCHM collection as a mid-sized museum collection. CCHM is the only museum in Clark County managed by an Executive Director who is professionally trained in accepted preservation and interpretive standards.
Based on a May 2004 survey of museum records, CCHM’s public holdings include the following: 11,738 3-dimensional artifacts; 4,500 Native American related lithic (stone) items; 2,000 books; 5,000 documents, manuscripts, maps, aerial photo maps and pieces of ephemera; 5,200 historical photographs; 700 copy negatives. In 2004 the CCHS board adopted an official Collections Management policy.
Private donations and government grants received in 2005-6 provided critical funding that enabled the CCHS to hire professional collection management consultants who increased the collection management practices and level of staff training at the museum. Donations of items for the 3-dimensional museum collection and archives are accepted on a regular basis.
The museum provides education programs for the general public, schools (K-12 and higher education), seniors, and special interest groups through its changing exhibits and related public programming. Teacher resources and training opportunities have been provided via special curriculum workshops as well as print and website materials. Museum programs promote tourism in Clark County by attracting/ extending visitor stay and offers volunteer opportunities for its residents.
Museum programs and special events maximize the economic benefit of visitation to Clark County by increasing foot traffic in local businesses and by virtue of its “no-compete” policy. Museum events focus on their intended goals and purposely do not provide food vendors or commercial sales that would detract from local business. In addition, the museum collection has an intrinsic value as a source for researchers including genealogists, scholars, authors, history buffs, and members of the business community, citizens and the media.
Due to the current rate of development in Clark County an unusually high number of archaeologists, real estate agents, developers, land use planners, business/property owners and journalists have been utilizing the resources in the museum’s research library. A list of the research topics pursued in the CCHM library is collected and recorded quarterly by museum staff. Publications produced by museum staff have made Clark County history accessible to the general public.
