The Sunset Defense Force encompasses three distinct force elements. Foremost for nearly 300 years has been the Sunset Defense Fleet. Secondary to the Fleet has been the Planetary Defense Command, but recently the Marine Command has been added making the SDF a tri-partate force capable of combined offensive operations as well as defensive action. The emphasis on Marine operations has expanded until the Marine Branch is now the second largest branch with it's own warships and fighter craft.

Most of the funding for the SDF is devoted to the Fleet still - it's operations are far ranging and cover everything from fleet combat to exploration to search and rescue and infrastructure construction. The funding for the Marine Command and Planetary Defense Command is rolled into the Fleet funding as well, but it is possible to determine an approximate spending percentage for each section. The Fleet is estimated to recieve 92% of the funds, with the rest evenly split between the two other commands. Of course this depends on whether you consider the Marine's shuttles and fighters, which are maintained by fleet technicians, to be part of the fleet and whether you consider the same for the planetary fighter wings.

Commander in Chief: President Atef Al-Zeif
Second in Command: Admiral Andrea Filbeck
MIDAS Flag Council: Admiral Samuel Wick

The SDF is broken down into Groups of 5 units known by a variety of titles depending on their role within the fleet. There are a wide variety of titles but these are the most common. Sunset Battle Groups (SBG's) are responsible for Patrol, Defense, and Search & Rescue. Sunset Exploration Groupds (SEG's) are responsible for exploration and scientific advancement, as well as intelligence gathering. Sunset Supply Groups (SSG's) are responsible for maintaining the ships of the SBG's and SEG's both at home and in the field.

Ground Elements

The Marine Command is responsible for maintaining Sunset's limited ground combat force. A total of 200,000 front line personnel are maintained and supported by the SDF logistics infrastructure. The Command itself focuses on their training, equipment procurement, and recruitment. Recruits are drawn from both the Fleet and the civilian population - it is common for ship's security officers to switch to the Marines or for Marines to switch to ship security officers.

Training for the Marines is varied and expansive - there are now several War Colleges in Sunset where they are educated (4 years) and all are also trained by various other governments to provide a wide variety of experiences and tactical/stragetic training. This training generally lasts 2 years and can be in Wazzu, Valinon, Scolopendra, Tor Yvresse, or Menelmacar. Small exchange programs can also be found with almost every Sunset ally.

Because of the smaller size of the Marine Command each soldier is expected to be able to accomplish a lot more in the field. This led logically to the use of cybernetic and chemical augementation for the Marines. Most have a small array of information gathering and survival oriented cybernetic implants - thermal optic eyes, range finders, targetting systems, and the like. They are not however mechanically augemented - that is felt to be too perminant in case of a return to civilian life. Instead they are assigned chemical augementation rigs. These units are activated before a Marine expects to enter combat and pump various boosting chemicals through their systems. Strength, speed, dexterity, and reflexes are all increased significantly.

Roughly 1/2 of the Marine force is carried in Chariot-Class Assault Shuttles. The other 1/2 are ground combat troops that take advantage of their increased speed and strength to carry heavy weapons capable of engaging tanks and other armored threats. Like the '0' Division they use pulse rifles, burst cannon, fusion cannon, plasma rifles, and rocket pods. They wear environmental body armor, but it is not heavy enough to take extended punishment and they are expected to rely on both better positioning and their speed to avoid incoming fire. The mounted troops are similarly armed and armored.
