Singularity-Class Dreadnought

The Singularity-Class is an upgraded and modified version of the previous Ares-Class Dreadnought. Like the Ares-Class it retains the heavy firepower and substancial staying power of that class but adds several key new features.

Foremost of these systems is the new Cyclone Torpedo System. Instead of adding more torpedo tubes as has been previous practice the Cyclone system dramatically increases firing speed as well as ammunition capacity. This is not done at the expense of safety - the system by it's very design isolates the torpedos while they are in storage to prevent ammunition explosions. These expanded torpedo systems are capable of doubling the firing speed as well as doubling the ammunition capacity of all launchers fitted with it. The Singularity-Class is the only starship equipped with this system on all of it's launch systems.

The new launch systems are tied into the new sensor system - the Athena Sensor and Communications System (AthenaSCS). The Athena system adds a dedicated II core for both sensors and communications, as well as another for inter-group coordination. Another also ties the various battle groups together into a fluid web that is capable of reacting to situations at unrivalled speed.

Since the Singularity-Class is an upgraded version of the Ares-Class only 10 Singularity-Class vessels are going to be built unless some are destroyed. Instead all of the Area-Class ships will be upgraded to the new systems in the first 5 years after AFY2500. The cost savings from this is expected to be significant and nessecary considering the expected expansion of the Sunset Exploration Command during the AFY2500 to AFY2550 period.

The upgrades to the Ares/Singularity-Class are expected to cost 78 billion di-coins and leave the final price on a new Singularity-Class at 645 billion di-coins. Due to cost savings for mass production the ship cost now includes the cost of support craft. The upgrades will take place on shipyards around Ares with an expected 90 Singularity-Class ships entering service by the end of AFY2505.
