BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BAILIFF was born 05 May 1870 in Fort Dodge, Webster, IA, and died 08 August 1939 in Yuma, Yuma, CO. He married LILLIE ANN BURGETT 29 December 1892 in Mt. Etna, Adams, IA. She was born 14 April 1871 in Manhattan, IA, and died 08 August 1939 in Yuma, Yuma, CO.

From the Yuma Pioneer Newspaper, Yuma, CO, Thursday August 10, 1939:

Yuma Couple Fatally Hurt
As Fast Freight Hits Auto
Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Bailiff Lose Lives Tuesday Night in Railroad Crossing Tragedy; Son and Wife and Two Others Jump to Safety; Funeral Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Bailiff, Aged 69 and 68 respectively, received injuries from which they died Tuesday night as the automobile in which they were riding stalled on the Main street crossing and was struck by a fast eastbound Burlington freight train.

Their son O.B. Bailiff and his wife Edna, of Castle Rock, WA, who were visiting here and the latter's brother and sister, Isadore and Naomi Banks, jumped to safety before the crash and all escaped injury.
O.B. Bailiff who was driving his own car, a new 1939 Chevrolet coach, said he did not hear the warning bell or see the swinging red light and was unaware of the approaching train until the wheels of the automobile were upon the tracks.

Apparently, he then became confused and instead of going ahead, he stopped the machine and attempted to shift gears, killing the motor. All of the occupants got out of the car and the young Bailiff and his brother-in-law said they tried to pull the machine back off the rails, but either it was in gear or the starter had stuck and it could not be moved. The older people were the last out and they stepped out of the car on the east side where they were when the speeding train struck the car broadside. The machine and Mr. and Mrs. Bailiff were hurled or dragged, or both, for a distance of about 150 feet and were thrown clear of the train. The man was hurled about twenty feet to the right of the main line tracks and his wife and the car were in between and not quite as far to the east. At least two motorists, who had been stopped at the crossing by the the warning signal, and several persons on the street witnessed the tragedy.

An ambulance was immediately called and the injured people were rushed to the Community Hospital where Mr. Bailiff lived for about five minutes and his wife for about an hour and a half. Both incurred broken legs, head lacerations, numerous bruises about their faces and bodies, internal injuries and possible brain concussions.

The car which was headed north at the time of the crash, was hit a little in front of its center and was almost completely demolished. Even the motor was smashed and twisted until it resembled a piece of junk. It would have been a miracle for any of the occupants to have survived had they remained in the machine. The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock and scores of people were attracted to the scene as word of the tragedy spread.

Mr. and Mrs. Bailiff came to western Yuma county on April 1, 1911, from Mt. Etna, IA, where they were married on December 29, 1892. They homesteaded land eighteen miles southwest of town and resided there until three years ago when they established their residence in Yuma.
