Abstract: Two collections were screened. One collection was on a horsemeat (Nebraska) diet and one on a horsemeat and raw chicken diet. Salmonella species (many) were isolated from both diets. Apparently healthy cats shed samonella in feces at high rates. Authors question whether this is an adaption of carnivores and whether a positive fecal samonella for an ill cat has any meaning. Authors also warn that keepers having contact with feline feces should take precautions to avoid samonella infection.
