Ointment for hands used to wash up after kittens

Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 17:43:54 EST Subject: FEL-L: Re: raising kittens -- hand problem ...

I am at my wits end and hoping someone can help. I am raising serval babies for a friend -- this is not about them really -- they are cute as he__! I am having a real problem with dry, cracked, bleeding, hands. It is getting worse -- dispite medication from the doctor -- who also says to keep my hands out of so much water ..... But then, I am sure he has not pottied newborns.

I have tried gloves -- and I am not really comfortable using them. So if someone out there has had this problem and found a cream or oitment that will protect my poor hands -- I would really appreciate it. As soon as the babies are in a cage and "going" on their own my hands will heal -- but when the next litter arrives - no matter how many months have passed -- my hands will do this again -- only each time they get worse. Thanks for any help, Nan

I too have my hands in a LOT of water and soaps when raising babies, raccoons, squirrels, fawns, need I go on? Any way the doctor that I go to told me that the high price meds that are handed out are no better than best foods mayo. Some thing in the makeup of the stuff moisturizes as well as heals the sores. Directions are put a small amount in the palm of your hand and massage into the whole hand, if all of that soaks in use more until it will not soak in. Then if you can get rubber gloves to wear while that mayo is on your hands so much the better. After about an hour take gloves off and wash hands in mild hand soap.

I do this at least at night and some times if I am just messing around that house I do it, especially if the weather is dry at the same time. So far no new out breaks since 1990. I really do hope that you try this and it works for you as well as it has for me.

Hi Nan! So you are baby sitting again:) ahh, when will we learn??????

The best stuff for your hand problem is UDDER BALM, you can get it at the feed store. I think Jeffers carries it too. It is so great! If you can't get this, then try A&D ointment (regular baby butt stuff). Apply to your hands just before potting babies and after washing up.

The best remedy for the hand problem is....I know you said you do not like gloves but if you can put up with them for a couple of days this will work. Put a healthy amount of vaseline in the gloves then put your hands in them and wear them all day for just a couple of days your hands will be healed. Its a little messy but it works.
