"It was the language of a savage or of a child, for one must be either of these--must one not?--to imagine that an artist might be a useful human being."

--Paul Gauguin, Noa Noa

A R T I S T ' S  S T A T E M E N T

I am mostly a self-taught artist. I made drawings of people since I was a kid. I was always fascinated by capturing a likeness, both technically and spiritually. Early on I was inspired by the work of Paul Gauguin and Frederick Church, artists who travelled to foreign lands of tropical beauty. I went through a stage of plein-air landscape painting, driving for hours into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. I worked fast and direct, using instinct rather than education. Eventually I began studying figure drawing and painting, taking night classes at the local art school. I developed an understanding of classical figure painting that now is the root of my style. I travel often to work in the field and gather new inspiration from the colorful cultures of the tropics. My main area of interest currently is the folk dances of Mexico and Polynesia.
