Nicolai Mountain There is a complicated network of logging roads that run between Saddle Mountain and Nicolai Mountain. Most of them are on private land and are gated (though you may happen on one or two open, especially during deer season). They are in varying degrees of disrepair and they often have large freewheeling log trucks on them. They represent a homogeneous habitat that can become very dull, but they are also where the Mountain Quail, Western Bluebirds and Gray Jays are. I recommend the Nicolai Mountain mainline. It starts on Hunt Creek off of Highway 30, just west of the Bradley Wayside. The whole road is on state land and has no gates. The clearcuts under the high voltage lines consistently produce bluebirds, and an early morning drive in the spring or summer should yield a fleeting glimpse of Mountain Quail running across the road. Near the top, the habitat changes to fairly large Douglas- fir and Cedar. You should hear Hammond's Flycatcher, but don't expect to see them. Blue Grouse, Gray Jay, Olive-sided Flycatcher and Hermit Warbler are regularly encountered.
