Thick-billed Murre (Uria lomvia)
Sunset Beach, Clatsop County
February 27, 2007

Individual was picked up alive on the
beach by Steve Roberts who brought it
to the North Coast Wildlife Center.  It
did not survive the night.  Sharnelle
Fee, the director of the center, froze
the bird and I came out on March 1 to
measure and photograph the specimen.
Culmen = 35mm
Bill depth = 12mm
Wing chord = 207mm
Tarsus = 34mm
The plumage was very black.  Sharnelle
said the calls it made were distinctly
different than Common Murre (she
has at least 20 COMU in various stages
of recovery).  The bill measurements
were not made with calipers, the
narrower bill depth may indicate a
1st winter bird.
According to the Birds of North
America online database, Thick-billed
and Common Murres have bills that
are the same "thickness", but a shorter
bill makes Thick-bills seem to have a
heavier bill
