Number of individuals, sex, age, plumage:  1; prob female
Locality:  Seaside, Clatsop Co. Between 7th and 11th streets north-south and between Necanicum and the Prom east-west.

               1338 Kensington Av.
               Astoria, OR  97103
Other observers: The bird was originally reported by Steve Warner on 29 Jan and relocated by Steve and David Bailey on 30 Jan.  It was seen on 31 Jan by me, Steve, David and by Mike and MerryLynn Denny.
Optical equipment:  8x42 Bushnell Binoculars
Distance from bird:  less than 30 meters
Duration of observation: about 1 minute
Habitat:  Residential area that includes many pine and spruce trees along with ornamental trees and shrubs.
Behavior:  the bird was very loosely associated with Yellow-rumped and Townsend's Warblers.  It was actively gleaning from the crowns of pine trees and would disappear into the foliage regularly and be out of sight for long stretches.

Description:

Overall: Size of a Townsend's Warbler, gray, white and yellow.
Head: Blue-gray crown, prominent white supercillium; white lores; black, triangular mask with white, post-auricular border; yellow chin, throat and upper breast.
Back: Blue-gray
Wings: Gray-black with two prominent wingbars.
Breast: Yellow upper breast breaking  cleanly to white at mid-breast;  flanks white with heavy black streks.
Belly and undertail coverts: bright white.
Tail: Dark.  I did not see many details of the tail.

The limited amount of black in the crown suggests the bird is a female and probably a 1st winter bird, though Pyle stresses caution in aging.

Voice: We all heard a distictive flight note "tsi-ip" quite different from Townsend's or Yellow-rump.

Similar Species:

Yellow-rumped Warbler: There were at least two Myrtle Warblers in the area (one of them singing) this bird lacked yellow rump, had yellow throat and white side, all gray crown.
Townsend's Warbler:  There were many Townsend's throughout the neighborhood.  This bird lacked the greenish back; yellow was restricted to the throat; distinctive white supercillium and triangular black mask.
Previous experience:  I have seen Yellow-throated Warbler in Florida.
