The Lottery Ticket Variant
Now here's an entirely different twist on the whole thing, attempting to get around the illegality of sending $1 to be "put on a mailing list." Here they are sending "free" lottery tickets to people on the list, and claiming even bigger returns than the simple $1 option scams do. Of course, it's still totally illegal, not to mention that it is a federal crime (See the USPIS Page, United States Code, Title 18, sections 1301 & 1302 on this matter) just to mail a lottery ticket and violates interstate gambling laws by sending lottery tickets to states (and countries) that have prohibitions against gambling.
As a side note, it's interesting how it's illegal in many states for individuals to run gambling, but okay for the State itself, don't you think? Oh, yes, but "it's for schools, or for roads, or for whatever..." Sorry, but in my book that's still hypocrisy... Not to mention that it is a 100% tax (money going to the State - you lose more than you win, don't you?) on income you have already paid taxes on... which is in my book stupidity... but I digress...
Look at the volume of mail this idiot expects us to believe that he got, and the amount of money - he claims to have made several million dollars. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the odds for the California State Lottery to totally wipe out his numbers? It's obvious that if there were over $119,000 in winnings off of 42,945 tickets he claims to have received in one batch that at $1 per ticket, the Califonia State Lottery is not going to be doing so well, and you could afford to just go down and BUY 50,000 tickets to make and 250+% profit from them.

RECEIVE OVER 30,000 LOTTERY TICKETS IN THE MAIL
YOU READ RIGHT !! WITH THIS FUN AND EXCITING
PROGRAM
YOU WILL RECEIVE OVER 30,000 LOTTERY TICKETS IN THE
MAIL IN THE NEXT 60-90 DAYS !!! READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW !!!
Dear Fellow Lottery Player -
A year or so ago I received a letter in the mail similar to the letter you are reading electronically right now. It looked like a lot of fun, and the cost was very low, so I decided to give it a try. Besides if this program worked half as good as the example, it
would be a huge success !"
Well, you're certainly correct there... IF it worked HALF as well as the example, it would be a huge success. Also, because of the numbers below, the California State Lottery, as well as the entire state budget, would be even more in the red than they are now. The money would have to come from somewhere, and your numbers leave no doubt that it doesn't come from the purchase of the tickets. Fortunately for California, this scheme won't work any better than the standard "Send a dollar to be put on a mailing list" routine.
"IT WORKED WITH AMAZING RESULTS ! This program has been improved over the years to get even better results !! I will never forget hot it happened...I followed the instructions exactly.
"
Can you explain how it has been "improved over the years" when: a) it is apparently a new twist on an old scam, and b) you say that you started "about a year ago"? I thought not. Oh, better get a spelling checker with all those millions, too.
"It cost less than I spend in two weekss on the lottery ! I dropped off 100 envelopes at the post office on the way to work late in October hoping at least to get a couple hundred scratcher tickets ! I received my first ticket in the mail in 8 days. A few weeks later my wife called me at work and wanted me home immediately. I raced
home in a panic. "
That's probably because you figured your crimes were catching up with you and she was being hauled out the door to jail, already knowing how illegal what you [claim you] had done was.
"When I threw open my front door I couldn't believe my eyes !!! My wife was standing over a pile of envelopes that the mail carrier had dumped on the living room floor. We spent the rest of the day opening and counting 3,298 envelopes, each having a California Lottery Scratcher Ticket inside ! The next day, we received 4,167 more !!! "
Right. The USPS delivered almost 7,500 letters in two days and didn't even bother to ask a single question. Let's do some figuring here. First, I took a box of 100 envelopes - these were new envelopes, and packed tightly in the box. The box was 5" inside. So, taking 7,465 envelopes and adding the thickness of the piece of paper wrapped around the ticket (being charitable here and only counting two instead of the standard three thicknesses a normal peice of paper would take to fold into an envelope) plus the thickness of the ticket itself (approximately 4 times as thick as a normal piece of paper) would be a stack approximately 125 feet high if stacked neatly on top of one another. Another way of putting this is that this would take up (using #10 envelopes which are 4.125" x 9.5") 58,781.25 cubic inches, or 34 cubic feet.
Second, this would mean that you were required to open one letter every 11.5 seconds for 48 straight hours just for the mail from those two days. I suppose that with a nice sharp letter opener and your wife's panic over and her helping you, that could be done, but because the volume only went up from there (as you claim in the next paragraph), when did you find time to eat, sleep, take a trip to the bathroom, and scratch the tickets? (Maybe that was while you were in the bathroom?)
"When the tickets finaly stopped coming we had received 42,945 Lottery tickets in the mail.."
Hmm... so the numbers above basically went up by a factor of about 5. I wonder where he found the space and time to deal with all those letters when the USPS semi backed up to his door.
"of thise tickets we had 27 one thousand dollar winners, 98 five hundred dollar winners, 112 on hundred dollar winners, 248 fifty dollar winners and 6,550 free plays !!! That's $119,772 dollars in Lottery winnings !!! And I didn't even include the free plays I received."
Mighty impressive, but I've never seen any lottery game (or any other form of gambling) with those odds of payoff before. Were you using special tickets? Perhaps the scratch & sniff LSD kind?
$119,772 winnings from 42,945 tickets yields an impressive average payoff per ticket of $2.79. For those odds, I could just go down and BUY tickets, scratch them off, and BUY more until I was satiated with money gluttony. Imagine the silliness of the Lottery People - allowing you to win an average of 2.79 times your investment every time. I can't imagine how that one slipped by them, can you?
"Needless to say I tried this program again, but this time I sent out 200 letters. After mailing those letters out, after a month or so, I had over $220,000 dollars in winnings !!! Believe me you can do the same thing!! This program is very easy to work, it's fun and
you always get a good response because you target a special group of people, California Lottery Players, just like you and me."
So, let me get this straight - in two months, you received approximately 150,000 letters (remember, you got twice the response the second time as the first), made over $339,000, and no one was even slightly interested in the amount of garbage you had hauled off every day (or failing that, the backyard bonfire with all the empty envelopes. Of course, I'm sure a concientious person like you would have recycled them, wouldn't you?), the amount of mail you received, or the number of lottery tickets you were turning in?
Hmmm... that works out to an average of one letter every 17 seconds or so 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You probably had pizza sent in because your wife was too busy to cook, didn't you?
"The hardest part I found when I first started, was finding a good source of names. Finding a company that sold quality names of California Lottery Players wasn't easy. Most companies sell names of people in special categories, but also sell their lists in large quantities only...this can be very expensive to the beginner. So, what I have done is ordered large quantities of these names and I will see you a small quantity of names for only $ 10."
You will "see me" [sic] names? Perhaps you mean "sell." So.... found another little scam to work on the side, eh? An extra $10, extra $10 there to supplement your millions you make? Why not just give them away with the stipulation they put you on their list? Of course, I am sure your name would NEVER be on any of the lists YOU sell to others, huh?
"Believe me you will want to use these names because they will get you the best results possible !! This fee covers my costs, and also provides me with free names to work this program. Yes, I still work this program !!! Even though I have won several million dollars
and I never have to work or play the lottery again, I do because it's a lot of fun !!!"
Sure, we all know you have such tremendous expenses, and you only do it because it is fun, not because you are an greedy, unethical, lying, scam-practising scumbag, now don't we?
"This program works because of simple multiplication. Here is what happens when only 8 out of 100 people respond to this program. On the average, 12 to 15 people out of 100 will respond to this program.
You mail out 100 letters, 8 people send you 8 tickets.
Those 8 people sent out 100 letters, 64 people send you 64 tickets.
Those 64 people send out 100 letters, 512 people send you 512 tickets.
Those 512 people send out 100 letters, 4,096 people send you 4,096 tickets.
Those 4,096 people send out 100 letters, 32,768 people send you 32,768 lottery tickets !!!
At this point your name drops off the list, but you've collected 37,448 lottery tickets in the mail everyday!!"
Hum... his math at least holds up for the numbers he uses (must have used a calculator, eh?) until that last paragraph where he says you get the total number he has figured "everyday" [sic]. Too bad the logic still doesn't work out as well as the math.
"If you do it once, you will do it again !!!"
Yes, recidivism is a big problem with criminals. Some of them just don't learn from their mistakes.
"This plan is perfectly legal. If in doubt refer to Title 18, Sections 1302 and 1341 of the US Postal and Lottery Laws."
I don't think so. You've never bothered to check it out, have you?
USC Title 18, Section 1302. Mailing lottery tickets or related matter:
"Whoever knowingly deposits in the mail, or sends or delivers by mail:
Any letter, package, postal card, or circular concerning any lottery, gift enterprise, or similar scheme offering prizes dependent in whole or in part upon lot or chance;
Any lottery ticket or part thereof, or paper, certificate, or instrument purporting to be or to represent a ticket, chance, share, or interest in or dependent upon the event of a lottery, gift enterprise, or similar scheme offering prizes dependent in whole or in part upon lot or chance;
Any check, draft, bill, money, postal note, or money order, for the purchase of any ticket or part thereof, or of any share or chance in any such lottery, gift enterprise, or scheme;
Any newspaper, circular, pamphlet, or publication of any kind containing any advertisement of any lottery, gift enterprise, or scheme of any kind offering prizes dependent in whole or in part upon lot or chance, or containing any list of the prizes drawn or awarded by means of any such lottery, gift enterprise, or scheme, whether said list contains any part or all of such prizes;
Any article described in section 1953 of this title
Shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both; and for any subsequent offense shall be imprisoned not more than five years."
Gosh, sounds perfectly legal to me!
"KEEP TRACK OF YOUR EXPENSES AND INCOMEFOR INCOME TAX PURPOSES. YOU WILL NEED A GOOD TAX WRITE OFF !!!"
Yes, those hundred or so envelopes and stamps plus the 100 lottery tickets (total: approximately $135) will make a huge dent against that $119,772 you made. Maybe you can write off the time to open the envelopes, the pizza eaten "on the job" and your wife's mental stress due to her panic. That might help.
"Would you like to receive thousands of free California Lottery Scratcher Tickets in the mail in the next couple of months?"
Sure, who wouldn't. If they were free, and not part of some illegal scam.
"If you would then just follow these simple instructions below :"
Well, that blew that one.
"1. Send one California Lottery Scratcher Ticket of your choice wrapped in a piece of paper with the words:
(HERE IS YOUR FREE GIFT)
to each of the five people listed below. This is very important !!! This step makes this program legal !!!"
Uhm, how's that? Is it the paper? Or you being allowed your choice of tickets? Just exactly what is it in that paragraph that gives me the assurance that this is legal?
"2. Order 100 or 200 names of lottery players, send order to:
Computech Mgmt., Inc., 12626 Bellflower Blvd., # 113, Downey, CA 90242. Remember for the absolute best results use only these names !! You will be glad you did!! 100 names are only $ 10, and 200 names are only $ 18. These come on self-stick, ready to mail labels. You can also buy larger
quantities of these names direct from the mailing list company: Advon Distributors. Their phone number is (800) 992-3866."
Pretty snazzy name there for your scam operation. I wonder if Advon Distributors knows you are using their lists for illegal activities? Should I suggest a polite call to them, with the names on the list below?
"3. Remove the name and address of the person in the #1 position and then move each of the other people up one position. Then place your name and address in the #5 position. This can easily be done by typing a new list and taping it over the old one. After you do this, go to a copy shop and make 100 or more copies. Then place the copies you have made in envelopes and stamp each with first class postage. When your name labels arrive, put on each envelope and mail them. In a few weeks you will have thousands of lottery tickets!!!"
And the moon will still be made of green cheese. And now for the deceitful denizens...
"GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN !!!
