ABOUT THE GALILEAN TELESCOPE WEBSITE

This website was developed by Tom Pope and Jim Mosher.

Tom Pope had the idea for the project, built the telescope and took all the pictures shown on it from the driveway of his home in Vancouver, WA. Tom is retired. He began his professional career as an observer with the planetary program at New Mexico State University, where in 1966 he was one of the few professional astronomers to witness the great Leonid meteor shower. He later worked as an observer at the University of Hawaii's Mees Solar Observatory on Maui and as Superintendent at the Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. He then spent 28 years with the Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, CA. where as a Senior Engineer he was instrumental in the design and development of telescopes for several successful space-based solar observing missions including MDI and TRACE.

Jim Mosher did most of the image processing, researched the background historical information, wrote the website material, and developed the computer simulations shown on some of the pages. Jim has a Ph.D. in physics from Caltech.
