SIMON & CHELSEA & JOSHUA
Canadian Lynx
Simon and Chelsea came to Wild Ones Sanctuary as 2 year olds from a fur farm in northern British Columbia. Joshua, Simon's younger brother, was four months old when he arrived.
Fur Farm cats are typically kept in very small cages (the equivalent of rabbit hutches for their size) with wire floors, built 3 feet off the ground. They are given minimal shelter which causes them to grow luxurious thick coats in the frigid temperatures. They are slaughtered by electrocution in their third winter when their coat is at its peak. (Check out the e-bay auction site for lynx fur items.)

These animals have no use for humans and find great comfort in the abundance of logs, branches, and discarded Christmas trees that are kept in their enclosures for camouflage and hiding. It is always amazing to me how a 65 lb. cat can become invisible even in close proximity.

Many of these lynx have never touched their feet to solid ground. It is sadly comical to watch them as they test the ungiving earth beneath their paws and literally learn to walk all over again. They have no idea what grass is or how to navigate through it when it is a foot high. Many of them use the technique of lifting their legs way up high and trying to step 'over' the blades of grass without bending it. Some will walk only around the perimeter of the enclosure next to the wire, until they feel comfortable enough to venture into the open space in the middle.
