To dump the first sector of the first hard disk to a file (if is input file and of is output file):

To view the file:
od -x mbr.bin
Note that dd and od are in the Cygwin utilities on Windows. There is also a tool called dump in Cygwin that works well. dd and od are native to Linux. Consult your Windows documentation to see if these tools exist natively in Windows. You can download a Windows tool similar to dump called dumpit, which many of you should recognize.

WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE dd COMMAND SHOWN ABOVE. USING THE WRONG OUTPUT FILE (of) CAN TOTALLY SCREW UP YOUR SYSTEM!!! MAKE SURE YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOU DIDN'T SWITCH if and of.

How to find the Disk ID:

In Windows XP:

  1. "Start Menu" then "Control Panel"
  2. Double-click the "System" icon in the Control Panel
  3. Select the "Hardware" tab on the System Properties dialog box.
  4. Click the "Device Manager" button.
  5. Click on the "+" sign next to "Disk drives" to expand the list of drives.
  6. Double-click the disk whose ID you want.
  7. Select the "Details" tab in the Disk Properties dialog box. The "Device Instance Id" will be displayed in the drop-down box.
  8. Click the drop-down box to open it and select the second item, "Hardware Ids".
  9. The information will be displayed below the drop-down box.
In Linux:
  1. In a console window type (you may not need sudo):
    sudo blkid
    
  2. Also, for a quick view of the partitions, use the lsblk command:
